When we started Mandarin classes at ILSCA, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wanted my kids to learn Mandarin, but I also wanted it to be something they genuinely enjoyed- not another class they had to sit through every week.
And that’s probably been my favorite part about ILSCA: the kids are actually having fun while they’re learning.
The classes are very hands-on. Instead of simply sitting at a desk memorizing vocabulary, the teacher gets the kids involved through songs, crafts, stories, games, and activities that give them a chance to practice Mandarin naturally.

It’s More Than Just Learning Words
Depending on the lesson or theme, the kids might:
- Sing songs and practice new Mandarin phrases
- Create hands-on crafts connected to the lesson or holiday
- Learn about Chinese holidays and traditions
- Listen to and share stories
- Practice vocabulary through games and activities
- Answer questions and participate in conversations
- Learn through interactive activities that keep them engaged
I love that the activities give them a reason to use the Mandarin they're learning instead of just repeating words from a worksheet.
The teacher also does a great job encouraging the kids to participate. She asks questions, gets them involved in the activities, and creates lots of opportunities for them to speak Mandarin during class.

And We’re Seeing It at Home
One of the biggest things I've noticed is how much more Mandarin is making its way into our everyday life.
The kids are more comfortable speaking Mandarin with me at home, and I've especially noticed a difference when they talk with their grandparents. They’re more willing to try new words and phrases and actually want to practice speaking.
It’s been really special to see.
They Actually Look Forward to Class
And honestly, one of the best reviews comes straight from my kids: they miss Mandarin class when they don’t have it.
They talk about the activities they did, what they learned, and they’re always excited when it’s time to go back.
That’s what I love most about their experience at ILSCA. They’re learning a language, but they’re also learning about culture, traditions, and how to communicate—and they’re doing it through activities that feel fun and engaging.
As a mom, watching them enjoy themselves while learning something that connects them to their family and grandparents has been pretty special.

More Than Mandarin
And if Mandarin isn’t the language your family is looking for, ILSCA offers a variety of language programs, making it a great place for families who want to introduce their children to another language and culture.
From Mandarin to Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, and more, there are opportunities for kids to explore a language that interests them.
If your child is learning a language- or you’ve been thinking about introducing them to one, sign up now for their fall session!
